I’m in my fifth and last semester at GSLIS, and looking back on my classes I realize that the things that have stayed with me all stem from my professors’ real life experiences. I was skeptical about graduate school, and worried that it would just be so much abstract theory. I didn’t want to be left with a degree but no inkling of how to function as a librarian in the real world! However, I have been lucky enough to have a few professors who’ve made me laugh and cry with their “war stories” (TM Michael Sullivan!) – real stories of the frustrations and triumphs of average librarians from all sorts of disciplines. It’s helped to remind me that I came to Simmons to learn a profession that’s going to have me dealing with new people and circumstances everyday, from the mundane to the ridiculous. So thanks for all your amusing and informative anecdotes, GSLIS profs. Hopefully I’ll have some of my own pretty soon!
