Hello! I am in my second semester at Simmons College pursuing the Archives Management concentration. I am originally from St. Louis, Missouri. I graduated from Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri in May 2011 with a BA in History. I moved to Boston the day before my first class at Simmons College–taking with me only what I could fit into two checked bags and a carry-on–and it’s been quite a whirlwind ever since!

When I’m not busy with school, I work part-time in the Patron Services Department at the Social Law Library, play my ukulele, and, of course, do all that I can to get out and explore Boston so that I can truly experience all that the city has to offer.

I have to say that I’m really excited to be blogging for GSLIS Admissions. I hope my posts are helpful to prospective students, especially those of you who might have concerns about moving long distances to go to school in Boston. I can’t wait to see where this goes!

“Hello!”

As we at GSLIS welcome autumn and enjoy our first “official” pumpkin spiced lattes and cinnamon-rimmed adult beverages of the season, we also find ourselves already in the thick of Fall Semester 2012. For many of us, including myself, this September we have noticed our 1-year anniversary of moving to Boston to embark upon the [...]

A Report on My Summer Classes

I’ve been absent from the blogosphere for quite some time now–it doesn’t feel at all like over a month has gone by, but that seems to be the case! Last you heard from me, I was finishing up my summer semester. I had just a few weeks to recover from that and am already embarking [...]

AALL Annual Meeting & Conference, 2012

You know what makes the end of a summer semester even more insane and difficult to manage? Attending a professional conference! Even though I knew it was a decision that would perhaps cause friends of mine to question my sanity, I went for it anyway and attended the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) Annual [...]

Adventures in the Social Law Library Archives

My unplanned foray into the world of law librarianship has taken yet another unexpected turn: I’m working in an archives at a law library! A few weeks ago, my supervisor at the Social Law Library told me that, if I wanted to, I could spend a couple of hours each workweek in the Archives. Of [...]

To Tweet or Not to Tweet?: Using Social Media in the Professional World

The title of this post is pretentious and misleading. I’m sure I’m breaking a cardinal rule of blogging by using a title that’s pretentious and misleading. But please bear with me anyway as, rather than producing the manifesto my title implies, I simply attempt to wrangle in all of the thoughts I’ve had about social [...]

Bringing Back the Music

One of the things I’ve struggled the most with since moving to Boston is the fact that, for the first time in my life, musical instruments haven’t been immediately accessible to me. Wherever I’ve lived up until now, I’ve had access to at least a piano, and I usually had my mom’s violin or my [...]

Vacation

After I finished up my classes a few weeks ago, I found myself in somewhat of a depressing predicament: I didnt know how to spend my time without having homework to do. I would find myself sitting at home bored after work and on the weekends. It took me longer than I would be comfortable [...]

10 Things I Learned in Library School: Year 1

Today, I turned in my last assignment of the semester, and I can officially state that the term is over. I tend to get self-reflective in moments like this, so I thought Id make a list of 10 things Ive learned in my first year of library school. The list includes not only some [...]

Getting Involved

I know, I know. Its annoying to talk about how important it is to get involved in extracurricular activities. Weve been hearing about it in every stage of education since we were old enough to make our own decisions about how to use our time. I think it is important, however, to re-emphasize once again, [...]

Marathon Monday

When you move to Massachusetts, they give you a free holiday! The third Monday of April is Patriots Day, the Massachusetts state holiday commemorating the Battles of Lexington and Concord. There were battle reenactments, parades, and ceremonies all over the state this weekend. One other big thing about Patriots Day is it always serves as [...]
