My name is Jessi. I’m a dual degree student (GSLIS Archives Concentration/History) at Simmons College, about halfway through the program. I’m originally from New Jersey though by a weird trick of fate my family lives in South Texas at the moment. I work part time at both The Massachusetts U.S. Attorney’s Law Library and at Tufts University. In my spare time (which isn’t a lot!) I love to read, do some crafting, write, watch Doctor Who and explore Boston!
With a computer programmer/gamer boyfriend there was no way I was going to forget that PAX East, one of the country’s biggest video game conventions, was this weekend. Not being a gamer myself, I steered clear of making it a four day event complete with the Pokemon pub crawl (gotta drink them all!) like he [...]
This semester I am taking a class called Digital Preservation. I haven’t had much previous experience with coding and such so this class has really taken me out of my comfort zone yet I can see just how useful it can be in not only the current archives field but in libraries as well. I [...]
Last week, I brought you my top five reading spots in Boston. This week, check out the next five best reading spots in the area! 6. Copley Square Although busier than the inner courtyard, Copley Square outside of the Mckim Building also provides a nice place to read. There are benches around the green [...]

It is snowing. AGAIN. I admit I am getting a little stir crazy. So far this weekend I’ve done homework in my bed, at my desk, in the tech lab, at my boyfriend’s house, at Pete’s Coffee (where I was continually interrupted by an adorable five year old next to me) and now I’m back [...]

So it’s snowing again here in Boston. It’s probably a good thing, I’m being forced to stay in my room and conquer my conference paper. But for those of you who aren’t contemplating the use of archives in art museums…here are some interesting articles I’ve come across lately relating to books and/or the library field. [...]

My friend was watching an episode of White Collar the other night. I don’t follow the show so I was only half listening until I heard, “We are going to have to go check out the archives.” A meme/blog post has been going around recently about movies with library scenes in them and it set [...]

As a dual degree student in Archives and History, I have one foot in the LIS (Library and Information Science) world and one in the CAS (College of Arts and Sciences) at Simmons. At times it can be a little frustrating since I’m dealing with two different departments but a lot of the time there [...]

One of the more common topics discussed in Library School is “the reference question.” For many of our patrons this still fits in nicely to the librarian stereotypes and what they expect when they enter a library: the tall foreboding desk with an old maid sitting behind it that you only go to ask questions [...]

Last week I had the pleasure of sharing with you some insights from my visit to McAllen Public Library, winner of the 2012 ALA Award for Interior Design. To read the first part of this two part series that talks about the physical building click here. A library, of course, is not just about the building. [...]

You may have heard of the McAllen Public Library. It has been mentioned in such places as the L.A. Times and Time. It is the library that won the 2012 ALA Interior Design Award, the library converted from an abandoned Wal-Mart. But while the media may concentrate on this unique layout, the McAllen Library is so much more [...]
