Collection Management Librarian, Bates College, Lewiston, ME
Bates College seeks nominations and applications for Collection Management Librarian. Reporting to the Vice President for Information and Library Services, this librarian administers collection development and management activities of the library and works with liaison librarians and members of the faculty to assure that collection development and management activities meet the present and future needs of the college. This is an opportunity for an imaginative leader to develop and manage the collections in a college where research is expected of all students and faculty members, and to work within one of the most advanced collaborative collection development programs in the country.
This librarian manages a budget of $1.7 million and leads a team of liaison librarians to assess and meet research and teaching needs. Acts as a subject liaison in an appropriate subject, provides reference and/or instructional services, and serves on the Information and Library Services management team that oversees all computing, library, media and telecommunications services of the college. The collection management librarian serves in a leadership role in CBB Libraries, the collaborative enterprise of Colby, Bates and Bowdoin college libraries.
The Bates College Library includes the George and Helen Ladd Library and the Edmund S. Muskie Archives and Special Collections Library. The library provides rich collections in all the areas touched by the Bates curriculum, and has been a leader in the adoption of electronic formats in all areas, including journals, databases, books and streaming media. The library is a physical and virtual center of research activity on the campus with heavily used collections in all formats, and is a lively environment for student learning.
The successful candidate will have a master’s or postgraduate degree or equivalent work experience in library or information science or related field, strong financial management skills related to library collections, and five or more years experience in an academic library. Candidates will show evidence of advanced library skills in collection development and management and demonstrated ability to foster teamwork and work effectively with staff at all levels of the college. Excellent oral and written communication skills and excellent analytical, collaborative, and interpersonal skills are required. This position requires flexibility to adapt to and lead change.
Desired qualifications include an advanced degree in subject area related to the liberal arts; reference or instructional experience, acquisitions experience and experience in collection assessment.
