The Collections budget in 2012-13 is 14.6M, which is the 5th largest in Canadian academic libraries. The budget has increased by about 60% over the past seven years (from 8.8 M to 14.6M). This has allowed us to expand our collection into new and emerging areas of scholarship. It also underlines the university administration’s strong commitment to the value of the resources we acquire for supporting the teaching and research mission of the university. The Library is strongly committed to a digital content strategy – there are over 500,000 e-books in our collection, as well as almost 100,000 accessible e-journals and over 650 research databases licensed for the university community.

Description: Reporting to the Associate University Librarian (Collections), the incumbent is responsible for the coordination of
the Library’s acquisitions activities, in all formats, in support of the research, teaching, and learning activities of the university community. A main function of the position consists in managing the various activities of the Acquisitions Unit, such as ordering, receiving, claiming, selection of vendors, monitoring of vendor performance, and budget oversight. The incumbent works closely with various other units and individuals to ensure that our acquisitions operations exemplify best practices and align with Library strategic goals. Moreover, the incumbent ensures that these activities integrate with workflows of other groups or services in the Library, such as the Document Processing, the Library Systems Division, and the Subject Librarians, in an optimal manner. The incumbent works closely with the Electronic Resources Librarian and the Acquisitions Coordinator to ensure that electronic resource procedures and workflows are integrated into the objectives and practices of the Acquisitions Service.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

1. A Master’s Degree in library and information science (MLIS) from an
ALA accredited institution or equivalent.

2. Minimum of 6 years of professional experience, or fewer, depending
on the relevance of experience to the position.

3. Knowledge and experience in library acquisitions and collection
development and in electronic resources activities and issues.

4. Demonstrated leadership skills, including a flexible and
forward-thinking approach to challenges and opportunities.

5. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a team member in a
complex library environment.

6. Demonstrated experience in managing staff.

7. Extensive knowledge of integrated library system applications and
issues, Electronic Resources Management (ERM) system, the web, IT
standards, practices and emerging technologies applicable in a library
environment.

8. Ability to establish and maintain excellent vendor relations and
demonstrated experience in license negotiation.

9. Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills

10. Strong organizational and planning skills.

11. Ability to manage tasks in response to varying time pressures with
shifting priorities and changing constraints.

12. Bilingual (French & English), spoken and written, including the
ability to make presentations in both official languages.

Departmental Focus
Maintains and enhances the Library’s core production systems and services, particularly Orbis, and ancillary applications as they relate to Acquisitions. Principal Responsibilities:

  • Runs, coordinates and monitors production systems services ensuring reliable performance, data integrity, collection of metrics and timely and accurate completion of jobs related to the Voyager Acquisitions module and tables. These services include: database loads, extracts, and transfers; the creation of database analysis and statistical reports; and the maintenance of application parameter tables.
  • Participates in system upgrades, new release installations, and special projects related to our core systems and services in the functional area of acquisitions.
  • Serves as the project manager and technical coordinator for the implementation of new programs and acquisitions system enhancements including the drafting of specifications for new automated services and coordination with the appropriate units and individuals throughout the YUL system. Develops and coordinates testing, documentation creation and training.
  • Manages and/or coordinates the transition of newly implemented systems to production status.
  • Establishes productive relationships with individuals and organizations at Yale and at other institutions, particularly those using the same core systems as the Yale Library, in order to advance the Library’s objectives.
  • Serves as an expert resource within the Library regarding core production systems. Routinely serves on committees and task forces.

Required Education and Experience:
Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited Library school. In selected instances, a post-graduate degree in a related discipline may be required or substituted for an MLS. Appointment to this rank is limited to two years at which time it is expected that the individual will develop necessary requirements to meet expectations of performance at the Librarian 2 level.

Qualifications

Required:

Reporting to the Head of Monographic Services, the individual in this position will lead the E-Books & Specialized Acquisitions Section, which manages e-book packages and monographic standing orders, as well as special monographic orders, including rush materials, multimedia, e-books and data sets.

The E-Books & Specialized Acquisitions Librarian will be responsible for shaping acquisition models and developing section workflows for evolving resources like e-books and specialized acquisitions. Additionally, the individual in this position will allocate section resources to meet identified priorities and will train and supervise section staff, facilitate communication between section staff and internal constituents (such as subject librarians), working collaboratively with other leaders in the Monographic Services Department to further its goals and maximize its success. The individual in this position will also be a member of the Library’s E-Resources Licensing Team. The individual in this position will engage professionally at conferences, through research and scholarly collaboration to prepare the section and department for new and emerging modes of acquisitions.

This position is a part of Monographic Services, a department focused on the efficient and effective acquisition and cataloging of monographic materials (both print and electronic). The Department is responsible for expending a monographic materials budget of ca. $5,000,000 annually. The Monographic Services Department acquires print and non-print materials (including e-books) using a variety of acquisitions methods: firm orders, approval plans, blanket orders, and standing orders. The Department places the orders, claims outstanding materials, receives the material and processes invoices for payment. The Department also establishes shelf-ready arrangements with library material vendors. After receipt, the Department does quality control checks on the shelf-ready materials received and performs FastCat treatment for mainstream titles with acceptable cataloging copy at the point of receipt.

Qualifications

Required:
ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science. Interest in and enthusiasm for working with specialized acquisitions as evidenced by related professional activity, presentations and publications. Demonstrated leadership potential, including management of a group project or supervisory experience. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Excellent organizational skills and an ability to manage time and set priorities. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively with a diverse range of colleagues. Enthusiasm for an innovative and evolving work environment. Experience in library technical services. Proficiency with creating and manipulating spreadsheets. Experience with an integrated library system (ILS), preferably Millennium.

Preferred:
Experience supervising fulltime staff. Academic library experience. Experience with international library acquisitions. Familiarity with acquisitions, list, ERM and cataloging modules of Millennium Integrated Library System. Budgeting, compiling and reviewing acquisitions data for decision making. JOB SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Vice Provost or a Program Area Director, the incumbent leads the Acquisitions & Financial Services (AFS) Team, ensuring that acquisitions and financial services operations and services are conducted efficiently and effectively. He/she coordinates ordering, receipt, and payment functions; establishes library expectations for vendor performance and methods to track vendor performance; and supervises all AFS Team members. The incumbent also works with the Libraries’ Finance Director and other AFS Team members to oversee expenditures related to compensation, commodities, contract, and equipment expenses. This position also oversees fund accounting and end-of-fiscal-year closure in the libraries’ integrated library system and internal library and accounting systems and reconciles expenditures with the University’s financial accounting system. Reporting to the Chief Acquisitions Librarian and Head of the Acquisitions Department under the Library’s Technical Services Division, the Collections Procurement Librarian provides professional, technical, and fiscal expertise in the overall management of orders and approvals, including management of gifts and exchanges. Manages the work of the Order Support unit and supervises (hires, trains, evaluates) staff who perform a variety of activities related to ordering of materials in all formats. Works collaboratively and collegially Library-wide with all acquisitions units, selectors, catalogers, and Information Technology Office to develop best practices to support the management of orders and approval plans for all formats of library collections. Keeps abreast of trends in publishing, and pricing practices and of vendor technologies and software developments as they relate to library fund accounting, budget analysis, and ordering technologies.

Primary Responsibilities

Manages Order Support unit
· Hires, trains and evaluates clerical & technical staff in the Order Support Unit within the Acquisitions Department.
· Manages process change and workflow shifts based on organizational and departmental changes.
· Assesses ordering activity throughout the Library. In collaboration with the Chief Acquisitions Librarian, develops best practices, policies and procedures for managing and ensuring accountability for procurement of collections materials.
· Makes recommendations for staffing needs and level of expertise needed for ordering units.

Manages Approval Plans
· Serves as the Library’s point of contact with approval plan vendors. Coordinates with subject specialists (selectors, curators, et al) on development of approval plan profiles. Communicates with selectors and vendors about desired changes to approval plans.
· Ensures that vendors adhere to profiles. Works closely with subject specialists and the Team Leader of the Monograph Support Team to monitor approval plan activity. Identifies reasons for duplication against other plans and orders and make appropriate adjustments to avoid further duplication. Monitors and evaluates all approval rejections.
· Works closely with the Chief Acquisitions Librarian and the Director of Collection Development to develop best practices, policies and procedures related to approval plans and approval plan materials. Works closely with the Acquisitions Technology, Training & Documentation Librarian to document said best practices, policies and procedures.

Manages processing of Gifts
· Oversees processing for accession of selected gift material and processing for disposition of unwanted gift material. Serves as the Library’s point of contact with Better World Books.

Manages the Exchange Program
· Develops a system for tracking the Library’s Exchange Program.
· Oversees and monitors Exchange activity.

May be required to assist in disaster recovery efforts. May be assigned to work at West Campus location in West Haven, CT.

Qualifications
Required:
Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program for library and information science and a minimum of two years of professional experience and demonstrated professional accomplishments appropriate to the rank. Appointment to the Librarian III rank requires at least five years of professional experience and demonstrated professional accomplishments appropriate to the rank.

Experience managing library technical services with an emphasis on acquisitions, particularly management of procurement of collections materials in all formats (print and electronic), and vendor relations. Two or more years of demonstrated supervisory experience, including training and staff development.

Experience with use of integrated library systems (preferably Voyager). Knowledge of the complex, ever-changing electronic publishing environment and scholarly communications issues.

Ability to plan, initiate, and implement effective programs, projects, and services. Excellent organizational skills; demonstrated ability to solve problems and manage complex workflows; a high level of numeracy and ability to deal effectively with complex budgets.

Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public presentations. Excellent interpersonal and team collaboration skills; and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, rapidly changing and ambiguous environment. Must be able to work with faculty, staff and students in a culturally diverse environment.

Preferred:
Demonstrated knowledge of one or more Western European languages. Experience managing acquisition of materials from non-Western countries. Demonstrated record of designing projects and bringing them to a conclusion in a timely fashion.

The University of Illinois at Chicago, a Carnegie RU/VH institution located near the Chicago Loop, with a student enrollment of 27,000 and offering doctoral degrees in 60 areas and master’s degrees in nearly 80, seeks a talented and innovative librarian to head its Resource Acquisition & Management Department (RAM).

RAM was formed in 2010 by merging the Acquisitions and Catalog Departments and integrating electronic resources management. It is a continuously evolving technical services operation that meets the changing needs of an ARL library. It handles ordering, receiving, and payment for more than $8.5 million in electronic and print materials. Electronic resources management handles license negotiation and access to the library’s electronic collections. Cataloging is done both in-house and through vendor services. The UIC Library contributes to the NACO program of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging. Work is performed within the framework of a 76-library Voyager state system called I-Share.

RAM is located in the University’s Richard J. Daley Library but serves all sites of the University Library system (including Libraries of the Health Sciences in four cities). The department currently consists of 4.8 FTE professionals and 16 support staff organized to perform Acquisitions & Rapid Cataloging, Resource Description & Access, and Electronic Resources functions.

The Resource Acquisition & Management Librarian reports to the Associate University Librarian and is responsible for:

  • managing and leading the department and its personnel
  • planning and implementing new initiatives that will improve service and efficiency
  • coordinating multi-unit projects
  • directly overseeing the Resource Description & Access unit, which performs original cataloging and database management and offers metadata services
  • proposing and implementing organizational and staffing changes to improve the department’s effectiveness
  • leading the development and implementation of new standards and systems in cataloging, acquisitions, and electronic resources
  • encouraging staff development within RAM, and among staff whose assignments in Special Collections and the Library of the Health Sciences include technical services operations
  • working effectively with vendors of products and services and with partners in consortia
  • contributing to management of the Library.

Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited library school program; a minimum of five years of substantial professional experience in one or more technical services functions in an academic library; knowledge of current trends and new developments in library technical services and the description and discovery of library resources; ability to lead change and foster innovation in a dynamic and changing environment; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; strong interpersonal skills; appreciation for the value of acquiring and organizing knowledge in a research library; and demonstrated ability to meet University standards in research, publication, and service commensurate with a clinical faculty appointment.

Responsibilities: Reporting to the Dean of Libraries through the Associate Dean for Technical and Automated Services, the Acquisition Librarian will be responsible for a wide range of departmental activities.

Primary Responsibilities:

· Acquire library materials in all formats for the Adelphi University Libraries.

· Coordinate the daily operations related to ordering, receiving and claiming

library materials.

· Monitor expenditures, vendor payments, encumbrances, and status of orders.

· Represent the Libraries’ interests with publishers/vendors.

· Conduct ongoing evaluation of vendor performance.

· Provide supervision and training for Acquisition personnel.

· Work closely with the subject selectors, Collection Development Librarian, Electronic Resources Librarian, Coordinator of Cataloging, Periodicals Manager, and the Associate Deans.

Other Responsibilities: Collection development and liaison responsibilities for one or more schools or departments. Participation in the Libraries’ information literacy program.

Provision of services at Swirbul Library’s main reference desk including occasional evenings and weekends. Service on University and Library committees. Participation in professional associations and activities. Participation in scholarly activities including research and publishing required for reappointment and tenure.

Qualifications: This is a tenure-track library faculty position. Applicants must hold a master’s degree from an ALA accredited school of library/information science. A second post-baccalaureate degree or similar proof of advanced study is highly preferred and is required for promotion to the rank of Associate Professor and for tenure. Applicants must possess excellent supervisory, interpersonal and communications skills as well as the ability to work effectively in a collegial environment. It is desirable that the successful candidate will have: a) knowledge of the book trade and library vendors; b) previous experience with acquisition operations in an academic environment; c) experience working with Innovative Interfaces or another integrated library system; d) evidence of ability to meet criteria for promotion and tenure.

Work Year: 190 day work year as per the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
