Political Research Associates (PRA), a social justice think tank that studies the U.S. Right, is seeking a Library Intern to provide support with our in-house library and archives and creation of an online catalog.

PRA’s in-house library has a unique classification system intended to cater toward researchers who follow the right-wing and advance social justice. Created by a member of the PRA staff, the library provides one-of-a-kind field experience for a Library Sciences student. After moving our office space, the library is in need of reorganization, labeling, and structural decisions about where new books belong. We’re also looking to make our library catalog available online on our new website, www.politicalresearch.org, accessible to scholars and providing a bibliography for researchers.

The thousands of items in our library include books, DVDs, tapes, recordings, pamphlets, extensive files of direct mail and clippings on a variety of organizations, and other miscellaneous items.

Applicants should be enrolled in an ALA-accredited Library Science program and have completed basic coursework in cataloging. The internship will run from mid-May until August, and the intern should be able to commit to work a minimum of 10 hours per week. The MWRA is a Massachusetts public authority which provides wholesale water and sewer services to 2.5 million people and more than 5,500 large industrial users in 61 metropolitan Boston communities. The Library supports a wide range of functions, including engineering, construction, operations, maintenance, and legal by bringing in external information resources and organizing internal information.

This internship provides an opportunity to gain familiarity with all aspects of running a small, specialized library, especially since one of the tasks will be to document our work processes. It is especially appropriate for someone interested in cataloging, from the selection of a library system through catalog migration, and also cataloging of local, non-standard materials.

Job Description:
• Learn daily Library operations, provide coverage, and update procedures for the Library Handbook (SOPs).
• Prepare for Library catalog and server migration and support implementation.
• Improve electronic access to internal and external bibliographic information.
• Inventory, catalog and provide user aids and signage for Operations and Maintenance manuals.

Supervision Received:
Works under direction of the Library Supervisor.

Qualifications:

Job Description
Perform subject analysis for a broad range and depth of academic library materials, both print and digital. Assign LC & Medical Subject Headings as appropriate. Assign LC, NLM, Dewey, and Canadian Classification numbers. Create full level cataloging records using MARC (or other metadata format) following AACR2 or RDA as appropriate. Supply library-specific cuttering and shelflisting as required. Verify headings against the LC Authority File. Upgrade LC CIP and other less-than-full-level records.

Qualifications
BA/BS degree required and equivalent library/vendor knowledge preferred. MLS degree preferred. Ability to work in a production environment and spend the majority of the day working at a PC. Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills. Ability to prioritize and work independently and as part of a team. Experience in cataloging is preferred, but we will train the right person with the aptitude and skills. Practical and theoretical knowledge of Dewey and/or LC Classification scheme, MARC 21 Bibliographic and/or AACR2r is desirable. PC skills, OCLC experience or experience using automated library systems for cataloging or acquisitions is preferred.

Title: Wildlife Conservation Society (Bronx Zoo) Archives Internship

The Project: As part of a grant-funded project, the Wildlife Conservation Society Archives is developing a website to display digitized copies of early-twentieth-century scrapbooks. Created by the Bronx Zoo’s first director, William T. Hornaday, these scrapbooks concern early wildlife conservation laws and activities.

The Internship: Reporting directly to the WCS Librarian & Archivist, the Archives Interns will be responsible for creating original descriptive metadata records for the digitized scrapbooks.

Qualifications: Enrollment in (or recent completion of) a Master’s degree program in Library Science, with a focus on Archives, from an ALA-accredited institution. Proven experience with Microsoft Excel. Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently. Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Internships at the WCS Archives are a learning experience, but students who have experience with Dublin Core and with Omeka software are encouraged to apply. An interest in early scrapbooks and/or the history of wildlife conservation is also useful.

Schedule: 12 weeks (scheduled between June 3-August 30, 2013), 10 hours a week, for a total of 120 hours. Work must be scheduled within 9:00-5:00, Monday-Friday.

Department Description: ARC (Archives and Research Center)

The Archives & Research Center (ARC) is The Trustees’ center for collections management and conservation located in Sharon, Massachusetts. The ARC provides access to The Trustees’ cultural resource collections for research and enhanced understanding of The Trustees’ properties. At The Trustees of Reservations, “cultural resources” include the buildings, features, landscapes, archives, decorative arts collections, archaeological resources, folklore and other features that tell the story of people and the land.

Internship Description:
The ARC staff seeks a college student or recent graduate interested in gaining direct hands-on experience processing and archiving the records of the Land Conservation unit. The intern will help preserve, arrange, describe, and catalog the collection. The Land Conservation unit is responsible for gaining accreditation from the Land Trust Alliance by showing that land project files are securely archived. The intern will have the opportunity to experience the working of the state’s largest land trust.
The ideal candidate for this internship will have a thorough understanding of archival theory, familiarity with aspects of computer sciences as they relate to archives (metadata, databases etc.) and must be extremely detail- oriented.

Skills Preferred:
Library and internet skills are a must. Basic knowledge of PC computers, Microsoft Word, and experience with databases is helpful.

TTOR Internship Requirements:
TTOR internships are open only to students enrolled in an accredited college or university. Internships are unpaid, however, help with transportation costs is available.

Project Archivist, Redwood Library & Athenaeum, Newport, RI

The Redwood Library invites applications for a full-time 12-month archives processing project to be completed between June 2013 and June2014.

Job Summary: Under the general direction of the Assistant Director, and with guidance from the Special Collections Librarian, the Project Archivist has primary responsibilities for processing selected manuscript collections. The project will focus on the collections that are most significant for documenting Newport history, including colonial-era records such as the Gideon Wanton Papers and the Irish, Bailey, Atwood Papers as well as the early nineteenth-century James DeWolf Papers. Other collections might include the records of the Newport Garden Club and the Newport Horticultural Society, the John E. Rovensky Papers, and the Ralph E. Carpenter, Jr., Papers.

The Project Archivist is expected to adhere to national standards as well as local practice. This is a full-time 12 month position with benefits and a salary of $42,500. This project is funded by the van Beuren Charitable Foundation.

Specific Duties:

1. Arrange the collections, house them in appropriate archival containers, and describe them in finding aids according to current archival standards.

2. Use Archivists Toolkit software to manage collection data and finding aids.

3. Export MARC records from Archivists Toolkit, adjust them for local practice, and work with Technical Services Librarian to import them to OCLC.

4. Convert finding aids to Encoded Archival Description and post them to Rhode Island Archival and Manuscript Collections Online (RIAMCO) with links from the Redwood Library web site.

5. Consult with Special Collections Librarian on context for the collections as well as proper handling of materials.

Outputs/outcomes:

• A DACS-compatible finding aid for each collection that is processed.

• A MARC record for each collection that is processed.

Qualifications:

1. MLS/MLIS with concentration in archival studies from an ALA-accredited program.

2. Experience processing manuscript collections gained through internships or paid employment.

3. Knowledge of DACS and EAD.

4. Keen ability to read and interpret manuscript data.

5. Strong attention to detail.

6. Demonstrated ability to complete projects on time.

7. Knowledge of Rhode Island history, colonial history, and early American history preferred.

8. Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor and other employees.

Work is performed in a library/historic site environment. There is exposure to dust, mold, cleaning solutions, and solvents. The work involves standing, stooping, walking, and some physical effort to lift and move manuscript material.

LIBRARY ARCHIVES & SPECIAL COLLECTIONS INTERNSHIP:

The library and archives has been providing resources, reference, and research for 34 years at Mote Marine Laboratory. Its collection is maintained for the support of marine research and education.

The library is currently engaged in an archives grant project funded by The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations. The project involves the library’s special collections and includes basic processing, arrangement and description of the materials, preservation activities, and increasing accessibility to the collections. As part of the project, pertinent items in the collection are being digitized and added to Mote’s Institutional Repository, DSpace.

One of the special collections held at Mote is the Bass Biological Laboratory Collection. This collection includes the records of an early biological laboratory operating in southwest Florida during the 1930s and 1940s. Another special collection consists of the hand-written field journals from the early 1900s of a prominent ichthyologist, Charles M. Breder, Jr. The library plans to transcribe these hand-written journals/manuscripts, digitize them, and add them to DSpace using descriptive metadata.

The library is seeking an intern to assist with this project. The intern will be involved in basic processing of archival collections, digitization of both the Breder and Bass collections, transcription of the Breder manuscripts, and data entry into the content management system, Archon.

The intern will participate in the activities and tasks listed below.

• Assist with various archival processing tasks such as arrangement and description, cleaning, and rehousing.
• Assist with transcription, verification, and editing of pertinent hand-written Breder field journals/manuscripts.
• Assist with digitization activities including scanning and creating TIFFS, JPEGS, and PDFs of selected materials.
• Crop, format and enhance digital documents as needed.
• Assist with descriptive metadata cataloging and loading of records into DSpace.
• Assist with data entry of descriptive elements into Archon, according to current archival standards.

Knowledge of the following is helpful:

o Awareness of current archival standards/best practices
o Excellent research and writing skills
o Experience with Adobe Pro and Photoshop
o Previous use of Microsoft Office Suite
o Familiarity with Dublin Core descriptive metadata
o Previous experience handling fragile materials

Seeking intern with a background or interest in special collections, archival studies, history, library science, history of science, computer/technology, data management, or related field.

The internship starts May/June 2013 for a total of 250 hours. Scholarship funds are available for this internship. The library is open from 8 – 5 Mon. – Fri.
