Position Title: Library Assistant – Circulation

Union: Library Association

Hours: 29 hours per week (mostly weekday, daytime hours)

Grade: L-1 Wages: $19.56- $25.52 per hour, plus benefits

Description of position:
Working in the Circulation Department of a busy, medium-sized public library, performs various tasks relating to the circulation of library materials. Assists in the processing of network transfer materials; assists in coordinating the work of clerks, pages, and volunteers; assists in maintaining online library events calendar; produces flyers, posters, bookmarks, and notices for library
events. Maintains various bulletin boards in the library. Participates in planning and publicizing community events and programs. Is responsible for the library’s museum pass program and online pass reservation system. Some Saturday and evening hours are required.

Minimum entrance requirements:
Bachelor’s degree. Courses in library science desirable.

At least one (1) year of experience working in a Library setting or working in a clerical, secretarial, record keeping or related field.

Experience creating informational notices, flyers and posters desirable.

The successful candidate will possess demonstrated ability to interact with the public with patience and tact; excellent organizational talents; excellent attention to detail. Good written and oral communication skills are essential.

The American Antiquarian Society has two openings for full time summer pages. The positions are temporary, beginning on or about May 13th. Approximately 35 hours per week, no weekends. Summer pages will be responsible for assisting readers at the busy Readers’ Services desk, paging library material from the stacks, returning library material, and operating the library’s online circulation system. Past experience at a high volume circulation / reference desk preferred.

The Blum Resource Center, located at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI), is seeking a volunteer intern to help develop, organize and modernize its collection of consumer-oriented health information.

The Blum serves as DFCI’s front door to patient education about cancer, its treatment, prevention, complementary care and about coping with this complicated diagnosis. Here people from all over New England can research and learn about their diagnosis through computer searches, educational programs, its lending library and its distribution of booklets, brochures and pamphlets.

It is also DFCI’s front door to many of the Institute’s patient and family programs. Free hats, new patient care bags and backpacks for children whose parents have a cancer diagnosis are among the items distributed at the Blum.

The Center’s manager is managed by a social worker and staffed by volunteers.

The Center is looking for a volunteer intern to help with the following activities:

- Conduct an inventory,

- Respond to patient requests for information,

- Staff the library,

- Opportunities to lead and implement patient education programs

- Assist the library in moving patrons towards using technology to obtain information,

- Craft and implement recommendations for the organization for non-circulating materials like brochures, pamphlets, booklets,

This is an opportunity for an enthusiastic self-starter to recommend and implement changes to the Blum’s operations that will improve the Center’s ability to serve people with cancer and their families.

Hours: The Center is open on weekdays between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Library Assistant

Provides library services for patrons; performs a variety of routine clerical and manual work in circulating, acquiring and processing library materials.

Works under the supervision of the Head of Circulation and Library Director.

Charges, renews and discharges circulating library materials using integrated library system; issues library cards; processes overdue charges and fines; collects money for library fines and fees and trash stickers; interprets and enforces library policies and procedures to the public.

Answers telephone calls and electronic mail messages and provides information or otherwise assists patrons. Answers routine reference questions; performs reader’s advisory services.

Assists in library collection maintenance and cataloging and processing materials.

Serves on Merrimack Valley Library Consortium committees as required.

Assists in planning and preparing library programs and events as required.

Performs other job related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:
a. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, or
b. Any equivalent combination of education and experience in an allied field.
c. Previous library experience desired.

HOURS
This is a 35 hour/week, benefit eligible position under the terms of the AFSCME Boxford Clerical/Library Employees Agreement. Usual scheduled hours are 3 days per week 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and 2 days per week 1:00-8:00 p.m. The Library Assistant shares a Saturday rotation. Exact hours depends upon library scheduling needs for both regular service and special events sponsored by the Library.

Compensation rate is $15.41/hour.

Position: LITC assistant: Tobin Montessori/Vassal Lane Upper School

Duties:
Under the supervision of the Library Media Specialist and Tech Integration Specialist, the LITC assistant will:

· Staff busy circulation desk with automated circulation system in K-8 school LITC.

· Process new materials, process weeded materials

· Use library automation system to do copy-cataloging

· Shelve books and other library materials

· Assist students and staff in locating resources and using the library

· Class coverage when there is a schedule conflict

· Do special tasks as assigned by Library Media Specialist and/or Technology Integration Specialist to support LITC management and student projects

Minimum Requirements: BA degree preferred, high-level of organizational and collaboration skills, familiarity with automated circulation; experience working with K-8 school children, experience in libraries, or interest in librarianship as a career highly desirable; experience with Apple and PC platforms; understanding of Dewey Decimal System and shelving procedure.

30 hours per week/until June 21, 2013
