Iowa State University is accepting applications for the 2013 Lennox Foundation Preservation and Conservation Internship. This twelve (12) week internship is intended to give current graduate students and recent graduates of preservation and/or conservation programs the opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge of care and treatment of library and archives materials in an academic library. Interns will learn about the overall functioning and organization of the Preservation Department and will undertake and complete a project based on their interests and skills, and the needs and capabilities of the Department.

Eligibility and requirements:

• Applicants must currently be graduate students, in good standing, in a program of library and archives preservation administration or conservation; or a recent graduate of such a program;

• Applicants must have completed at least four preservation or conservation courses before the anticipated start date of this internship;

• Applicants must commit to 12 consecutive weeks of full-time employment as interns;

• Internship must be completed within the calendar year;

• At the end of the internship, the intern will be required to submit a final report or project;

• Applicants must have student or working visas if not U.S. citizens.

The 2013 Lennox Foundation Internship provides a $3,200 stipend, travel expenses to and from Ames, and housing expenses.

Photo Cataloging Intern, City of Boston Archives

The City of Boston Archives preserves Boston’s municipal archival records by means of facilities, programs and procedures for physical accommodation, security, environmental control and document conservation. The City Archives makes Boston’s municipal archival records accessible to the public by means of document finding aids, reference procedures and the promotion of public use, and ensures ready access to essential evidence that documents the rights of citizens, the actions of municipal officials and Boston’s historical municipal experience.
Under the supervision of archivists, the Photographs Intern will rehouse, catalog, and digitize a collection of photographs from Boston’s Landmarks Commission. The intern will use Archivist’s Toolkit to create a finding aid which will be posted on the Archives’ website. Additionally, the intern will select photographs for digitization, scan photographs, and post photographs on the Archives’ flickr page and other social media outlets.
Interns should be enrolled in or have recently completed an Archives Management program. Previous experience cataloging photographs, creating metadata, and using Archivist’s Toolkit is preferred but not required.

The Bay Path College Archives project needs your help! If you have an interest in academic library archives, the Hatch Library staff at Bay Path College invites you to consider interning with us this semester. We would currently welcome one or more Simmons interns who could help us review the contents of various boxes to prepare them for storage, make classification decisions, and develop finding aids.

WHERE?

Bay Path College is a dynamic private college located in nearby Longmeadow, Massachusetts. Since our founding in 1897, we have emphasized a career-focused curriculum that prepares students to become professionals and leaders in their fields. Our innovative programs for undergraduate women, our One-Day-a-Week Saturday program, twelve graduate programs for men and women, and Bay Path Online have made us a pioneer among our peer colleges.

The Hatch Library supports the college’s 2,300+ residential and commuter students, online students from throughout the United States and beyond, programs on all levels and at two satellite campuses, in Charlton and Burlington, MA, and is open seven days a week year round.

Preservation Internship – Fall 2012

The State Library of Massachusetts seeks a preservation intern with proven hand skills and interest in preservation and conservation. State Library internships are unpaid, but provide students with valuable work experience in a unique library setting. The library is conveniently located in downtown Boston in the Massachusetts State House, one block from the Park Street MBTA station. Our operating hours are Monday through Friday 9-5.

Since the early nineteenth century, the State Library has continuously collected materials that reflect Massachusetts’ government, culture and history, and continues to maintain the most comprehensive collection of Massachusetts state publications in existence. The Library has an active program to make its collections available through public programs, exhibitions, and digitization.

The State Library’s Special Collections Department includes items that need special care due to their age, fragility, or format. Holdings comprise rare books, manuscripts, broadsides, newspapers, tax valuations, architectural drawings, prints and photographs, scrapbooks, and souvenirs. The collection is particularly strong in nineteenth and twentieth-century city directories, maps, and atlases.

Preservation Internship

The preservation intern will assist Special Collections staff with the preservation aspects of a special project to digitize Massachusetts atlases, and the creation of enclosures for ephemeral items in the library’s Massachusetts Room collection. Other possible projects include building phase boxes, exhibit preparation, document repair, digitization, and surface cleaning and digitization of manuscript maps from the 1800s. The intern will be responsible for keeping repair statistics and writing entries about their work for the library’s blog.

The preservation intern should have excellent spoken and written English and be able to schedule their internship hours between 9am and 5pm, Monday through Friday. We request a minimum weekly commitment of four hours, and prefer one or two days per week.

The preservation intern should have completed LIS 439: Preservation Management prior to the application for internship, or have commensurate work experience. Enrollment in or completion of LIS 447: Collection Maintenance and/or LIS 471: Photographic Archives and Visual Information is desired.

Additionally, the intern should have a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel, and Adobe Photoshop. Hand-skills are an important characteristic for the intern and ideal candidates will have experience with an activity that exhibits hand dexterity, especially previous preservation experience.

Reference Internship – Fall 2012

The State Library of Massachusetts is offering an unpaid reference internship in its Special Collections Department. The internship will start on October 1, 2012, and will continue at least through the end of the fall semester, with the possibility of extension through the end of the academic year.

This internship provides the student with valuable work experience in a unique library setting. The library is conveniently located in downtown Boston in the Massachusetts State House. We request a minimum commitment of eight hours per week, preferably in two four-hour shifts. Number of hours and schedule are negotiable but must be filled during the department’s public hours of Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm.

The ARLIS/NA Internship Award provides financial support for students preparing for a career in art librarianship or visual resources curatorship. The award grants $2,500.00 to the selected recipient to support a period of internship in an art library or visual resources collection.

The Salzburg Global Seminar is an institution focused on global change, a place where innovative ideas lead to practical solutions. As an independent, neutral forum, the Salzburg Global Seminar engages current and future leaders in candid discussion to inspire creative thinking and to pioneer strategies for change. Each year, more than 1,000 professionals from over 100 countries gather at the Seminar’s impressive rococo palace at Schloss Leopoldskron for discussions on political, social, and cultural issues of universal concern (http://www.salzburgglobal.org/).
As part of its educational program, the Salzburg Global Seminar offers a three-month, non-accredited internship program. The Seminar is seeking for this summer, a qualified student or recent graduate to work in the Seminar’s small, but beautiful library and work on an archives digitization project. In preparation for the off-site storage of its institutional textual records, the intern will be responsible for the selection and digitization of historic documents dating from the seminar’s inception in 1947 until circa 1995, when born digital documents became standard for the seminar. The intern will also perform normal library duties such as: maintaining the periodicals department, cataloging acquisitions, general collections maintenance, and assisting with session preparation including the creation of bibliographies and recommending book purchases.

To qualify, candidates should be in or have just graduated from Simmons College/GSLIS with a concentration in archives management. Suitable candidates should have some experience working in a library, knowledge of current archives practices, the ability to work with a wide range of people, strong research skills, self-motivation, computer knowledge, and interest in the Seminar’s program. Due to visa and work permit regulations in Austria, qualified applicants are limited to citizens from the United States or the European Union. This is an unpaid internship, with travel to and from Salzburg provided, as well as room and full board at the Seminar.

There are four periods of time for which internships are available. These are:

January 20 – April 20, 2013
April 15 – July 15, 2013

Boston Biomedical Consultants, Inc. (BBC) actively analyzes the In Vitro Diagnostic (IVD) industry, providing consulting services and market research capabilities to clients. IVD products are medical tests that examine samples to detect, diagnose, and manage medical conditions. This niche market generates >$40 billion in revenue and is in constant flux with new technologies, mergers and acquisitions, and new companies.

The Information Services Intern, under the supervision of the Information Services Manager, will perform a variety of duties to support the needs of the BBC staff, with a focus on original cataloging for the company’s digital repository of company reports and other client deliverables. BBC maintains an active database of information and is currently in the process of developing a digital archive of over 30 years of collected data in a variety of formats. Familiarity with the DSpace Digital Repository is preferable along with an interest in corporate librarianship .

Responsibilities:

  • Edit scans of historical documents using Adobe Acrobat (cropping, rotating, OCR, etc.)
  • Create original catalog records for historical BBC consulting reports using Dublin Core metadata standards and an IVD-specific controlled vocabulary list created by BBC
  • Assist with weeding of physical library files, including removing duplicate items, scanning of papers and other documents before recycling original documents, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned, including filing, assistance with research requests, etc.

Qualifications:

  • B.S. or B.A.; current MLS student with completed coursework in corporate libraries and/or digital archiving preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to learn new information and quickly build a knowledge base
  • Ability to carry out assigned duties independently and in an organized manner
