The Newton Free Library, recognized as one of the best public libraries in the nation, is seeking a part-time library assistant to join our team as a Senior Library Assistant. This is an opportunity for an individual with a positive attitude who enjoys interacting with the general public and thrives in a fast paced environment that frequently changes.

Candidate must possess excellent customer service and communication skills, strong organizational skills, have the ability to pay attention to detail and easily prioritize tasks.

Summary of Job: Serve at busy Main Circulation desk and Audio-Visual desk. Perform a variety of office tasks and circulation duties as assigned or needed including checking material in and out, answering phones, processing items on-hold for patrons, unpacking and organizing deliveries from our library network and answering basic informational questions.

Additional Qualifications: Bachelors Degree required. Must be capable of lifting 40 pounds. Commitment of at least one year.

Salary & Schedule: Guaranteed at least 5 hours per week and every other weekend Saturday 9-5 and Sunday 1-5. $15.64 per hour and $23.46 per hour on Sundays.

Provide intermediate problem-solving assistance and advanced problem referrals to Reference and other specialized staff.

Reports to: Library Commons Librarian for Technology and Access

Essential Duties:
1. Assist library patrons in their needs concerning hardware, software, research, printing, processing, formatting, product creation, Web/E-mail communications, digitization, etc., especially from the public service desks. Provide intermediate problem solving help and advanced problem referrals to research and other specialized staff. Requires the facility to assist users with technology needs of varying complexities.
2. Assist library administration and commons staff, including public service staff (research, circulation, stacks maintenance, digital services, etc.) collections services staff, and special collections, as needed, including coordinating the interlibrary loan/ILL work of Library Commons Assistants and supervising Student Commons Assistant work. Assist in the development and implementation of a work/study training program for Student Commons Assistants.
3. Share coordination of ILL processing, including PC, HELIN, and outside requests using various commercial and/or open source library software systems.
4. Perform basic and intermediate computer functions including managing databases; creating, analyzing, and integrating spreadsheets; creating mail and envelope merges; and the ability to import graphics and other information into a document.

Marginal Duties:
1. Answer phone, greet and direct visitors to appropriate areas or persons.
2. Organize and maintain calendars, schedules, filing systems, and records that may include confidential information.
3. Produce correspondence and documentation through typing, word processing, formatting, use of charts, graphs and other visuals, collating, photocopying, binding, etc., according to the standards of the department and the College; proofread for content, language, and grammar.
4. Operate and perform intermediate troubleshooting for fax, copy, printer and scanner machines such as removing jammed paper, adding toner, one-on-one or small group equipment training and calling for service and supplies.
5. Perform all other duties as may be required.

Education and Experience Required: High school education or equivalent, some college preferred.
Three to five years library experience or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience preferred.
Experience with HELIN and/or Innovative Interfaces, Inc., or similar IL System preferred.
Excellent interpersonal and telephone skills and the ability to work confidentially with students.

Position Summary:
The Milton Academy Cox Library serves students in grades 6-12. We are currently looking for a part-time library assistant to work with and support three full time librarians. The ideal candidate will be a life long learner who enjoys working with people. This position is for the academic year (September – June), and is approximately 20 hours per week in the mornings. The details of the schedule can be flexible based on the needs of a qualified candidate. This position is not benefit eligible.

Specific Responsibilities:
The responsibilities listed below are representative of the tasks involved, but the list is not exhaustive.  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to respond to the daily needs of students, faculty and staff.

  • Shelve items and help maintain library collection and space
  • Prepare items for shelving
  • Work at the circulation desk, checking items in and out
  • Respond to individual requests for help
  • Provide support to students and faculty on research and resources questions

Qualifications:

  • Extensive experience in customer service
  • Experience working in a library is preferred
  • Sense of humor; positive upbeat personality
  • Must enjoy working with teenagers
  • Familiarity with an independent school environment
  • Must be able to lift 20 pounds, push a cart loaded with 30 pounds of books, and frequently climb stairs
  • Familiarity with young adult literature is also a plus
