REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

ALA-accredited Masters of Library Science or equivalent; minimum of 5 years of experience in an academic library or similar setting.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Experience with a discovery system, preferably EBSCO Discovery Service; experience with OpenURL systems, SFX or A-Z/LinkSource;
experience with an electronic resources management systems, preferably EBSCO ERM Essentials; familiarity with emerging information
technologies, and web technologies; ability to participate in and lead digital initiatives in collaboration with librarians, faculty, and university administration; experience using spreadsheets; experience with Microsoft products; experience communicating with vendor; experience with library consortia; ability to collaborate and work with library faculty and staff, faculty in academic departments, and other staff at a university; ability to work well individually and within a team in an non-traditional academic and evolving work environment; experience in the distance education environment; experience in project management; strong analytical, problem solving, and organizational skills, as well as attention to detail; excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; strong writing ability; conference presentation experience; knowledge about the process of selection, acquiring, evaluating, and licensing of electronic resources; knowledge about establishing and maintaining budget guidelines for electronic resources; capable of handling financial and accounting matters related to electronic resources management; knowledge of electronic resource statistical reports and providing assessment reports; able to manage access issues and maintenance of electronic resources; academic degree in computer science, business, finance, or accounting.

The Social Work Librarian leads the Library’s efforts to anticipate and fulfill the research, learning, and information management needs of the School of Social Work. S/he provides leadership and expertise in the areas of evidence-based research, course development, instruction, health literacy, scholarship and scholarly communication, and social work informatics. Guided by the University’s strategic plan, the School’s mission, and best practices in the areas of information literacy and health informatics, the Social Work Librarian advances institutional and School priorities; s/he facilitates community engagement; and pursues relevant
professional and scholarly activities. The Social Work Librarian participates in committees and projects within the Library, the School of Social Work, and at the University level.

This is a full-time, non-tenure track faculty position at a rank of Librarian I or II. This position reports to the Head of Liaison and Outreach Services.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate:

Cultivates and sustains vital connections between the School
of Social Work and the Library.

Delivers expert research consultations to faculty and

students, emphasizing targeted searching skills, quality evidence-based
research, and critical appraisal of varied resources, including clinical
resources.

Works with social work faculty to conduct systematic reviews; assesses the research impact of scholarly output to inform and support
promotion, tenure, and grant applications.

Advises faculty and students regarding scholarly communication; disseminates University research findings to the community
in translational research projects.

Builds collaborative relationships with social work students and faculty and advocates for their particular research, learning, and
information management needs.

Creates and leads dynamic instructional programming to support students’ professional competency requirements in information technologies, informatics, critical appraisal, and evidence-based practice.

Discovers and implements innovative technologies, including social media, to advance teaching and learning, communication,
collaboration, and information management.

Designs and delivers research and information management workshops to individuals and groups, both in person and virtually.

Advances learning opportunities for distance students, develops tools for online learning, and counsels users regarding copyright
compliance for virtual learning.

Engages faculty, staff, and students in sustainable outreach projects with a health information or health literacy component;
collaborates with the Library’s Outreach Librarian on state-wide projects; and initiates grant-funded collaborations with the School of Social Work.

Collaborates on accreditation processes involving self-studies and site visits.

Participates actively in School of Social Work committees, Library committees, University committees, and related professional
organizations.

Enriches the fields of social work education and informatics through relevant, progressive scholarship; information sharing; and meaningful networking.

Continuously evaluates new research, program development, and curricular trends within the fields of social work and academic health
sciences librarianship.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

- ALA-accredited MLS degree
- An undergraduate degree or comparable background in social work, the social sciences, public health, or a related field.****
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a strong customer-service orientation
- Expert searching skills in health and social sciences databases
- Demonstrated ability to deliver quality instruction
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team

The Towson University Library Residency for Diversity and Innovation seeks an early-career librarian for a two-year residency program to begin July 1, 2013. The program is designed to provide a broad range of experiences in academic librarianship, a supportive environment for professional exploration, and an opportunity for concentrated experience in an area of specialization. The purpose of the program is to help increase the presence of members of underrepresented groups in academic librarianship and to bring fresh ideas and new perspectives to the library.

Position Description:
The Library Resident will gain experience in an array of academic library functions, enhance his/her professional skills and prepare for future career opportunities. Library administrators, faculty, and staff will serve as formal and informal mentors and will help the Resident acclimate to the library, university and Greater Baltimore metropolitan area.

In year one of this two-year residency, the Resident will have significant responsibilities and gain meaningful work experience within three library departments:

* Research, Reference, and Instructional Services
* Technical Services – Collection Development, Acquisitions, Cataloging, and Serials
* Archives and Digital Collections

The Resident will also be involved in library and university committees, develop collegial relationships with faculty outside the library, and participate in professional organizations.

In the second year, the Resident will work with the Residency Coordinator and department heads to identify a capstone project that is tailored to his or her professional interests and to the needs of the library. A goal of this project is for the Resident, working independently or with colleagues, to develop, complete and report research at a professional conference or in a professional journal.

The Library Resident will be appointed for a two-year term with non-permanent faculty status. Salary is commensurate with that of an entry-level professional librarian. In the second half of the year, Associate Fellows have the opportunity to choose projects based on real-world problems proposed by library divisions and work with librarians and library staff over a six-seven month period. Successful projects have led to peer-review publications and to services that have become a regular part of library operations.

The September through August program also offers professional development and an introduction to the wider world of health sciences librarianship that may include:

  • Supported attendance at national professional conferences, often including the Medical Library Association’s annual meeting, the American Medical Informatics Association annual meeting and others

The University of Maryland Libraries is seeking a Special Collections Librarian for Access that will lead planning and project direction for arrangement and description initiatives in Hornbake/Special Collections. Under the general supervision of the co-leaders of Special Collections this person acts as leader of the Access Group as well as serving as a liaison to the Libraries’ Metadata Services department. They will supervise processing projects undertaken by staff, student assistants, interns, field study students, and volunteers. Depending on subject expertise and interests this position will play an affiliated role in one of four collection groups within Special Collections (Culture & Literature, State of Maryland and Historical Collections, University of Maryland, and Mass Media & Culture). Other duties may include serving on a reference desk, committee work, and instructional assignments.

Requirements:

  • MLS degree from an ALA-accredited institution of higher education or an advanced degree with an emphasis on special collections and archival studies and evidence of formal instruction/training in arrangement and description.
  • A minimum of two years experience at the professional level in a special collections repository and experience in processing a variety of archival and manuscript collections.
  • Prior experience supervising student assistants, volunteers, and support staff.
  • Thorough understanding of archival principles and practices including experience in finding aid preparation in accordance with DACS
  • Knowledge of electronic access tools including Encoded Archival Description (EAD)
  • Knowledge of trends in digital libraries
  • General familiarity with rare book cataloging and approaches taken in inventorying and cataloging special collections holdings in all formats
  • Knowledge of current arrangement and description practices such as More Product Less Process (MPLP)
  • Familiarity with preservation and conservation practices

Towson University seeks an innovative, user-focused librarian to specialize in the creation, analysis and maintenance of metadata. The Metadata Librarian will play a leading role in developing and implementing metadata strategies associated with digitization efforts. In collaboration with other staff, the Metadata Librarian will evaluate the effectiveness of metadata for resource discovery and access and develop metadata schema for the library website. In addition, the Metadata Librarian will participate in the management of e-resources and assist with the expansion of online collections and new digital initiatives. The Metadata Librarian will also provide training, consultation and documentation on the creation and application of metadata to faculty, staff and student workers. Additional responsibilities may include original and copy cataloging for both digital and non-digital content. As a faculty librarian at Towson University, this librarian will also serve as a subject liaison for assigned disciplines and provide information literacy instruction. The successful candidate for this challenging and varied position must have an aptitude for complex, analytical work with an attention to detail and have the ability to prioritize, plan and manage projects in various departments of the library.

This is a 12-month library faculty position on the permanent status track. Librarians are expected to progress successfully along the promotion and permanent status track and participate fully as members of the library faculty. Glenstone is a place that seamlessly integrates art, architecture, and landscape into a serene and contemplative environment to form a unique connection between art and visitor. It expresses the personal vision of its founders by assembling and presenting post–World War II art of the highest quality in a series of refined architectural and outdoor spaces. These settings exist to exhibit works of art—created from 1945 through the lifetime of Glenstone’s founders—that represent the greatest historical shifts in how art is seen and experienced.

Glenstone is located in Potomac, Maryland, outside the nation’s capital. Glenstone has embarked on a major expansion over the next few years with the construction of a new exhibition facility that will present the extensive collection of the founders and further their mission.

Glenstone offers internship experiences to prepare Masters of Library, Archives and Information Science students (MLS) for careers in museum libraries and archives in the 21st century.

The Digital Projects internship provides the opportunity for MLS students to work in support of the Glenstone Registrar and Library and Archives staff with digitization initiatives, used to increase access to collections through new media through the creation of electronic surrogates, while gaining practical field experience in a Museum Library and Archives setting.

This position is a part-time summer position that comes with a stipend. Employment can begin as soon as May. Interns must schedule their work Monday through Friday during regular business hours. The Digital Projects Intern will work under the supervision of the Registrar and guidance of the Assistant Archivist.

The Digital Projects Intern will be responsible for scanning registrar files in support of the museum staff, to include following best practices for digital imaging, file-naming, file migration, processing archival records, archival storage of electronic files, and other activities as assigned.

Major duties include scanning records and images with a flatbed scanner and a sheet-fed scanner; exercising quality control over digital files, including adjusting scans for contrast, sharpness, and/or color fidelity; naming digital files in accord with the registrar’s file-naming conventions; separating and organizing scanned files; entering and editing metadata; preparing technical and administrative documentation; and performing re-processing of paper and digital files, as well as other duties as assigned.

The preferred candidate will possess the following qualifications:
- MLS Graduate student in archives, records management and/ or information management with a demonstrated interest in digital imaging and visual arts and art history
- Knowledge of digitization standards and best practices and with procedures and guidelines regarding proper archival document handling
- Ability to exercise discretion and maintain
confidentiality
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Strong computer skills and software knowledge;
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and in using Adobe Proficiency in using Photoshop for basic photograph editing
- Facility with visual acuity and with exercising quality control over files, including adjusting scans for contrast, sharpness, and/or color fidelity
- Ability to self-direct tasks and ability to work under pressure and meet aggressive deadlines
- Ability to set up, calibrate, and trouble-shoot scanning equipment
- Knowledge of basic metadata development
- Strong service orientation and interpersonal skills
