The MWRA is a Massachusetts public authority which provides wholesale water and sewer services to 2.5 million people and more than 5,500 large industrial users in 61 metropolitan Boston communities. The Library supports a wide range of functions, including engineering, construction, operations, maintenance, and legal by bringing in external information resources and organizing internal information.

This internship provides an opportunity to gain familiarity with all aspects of running a small, specialized library, especially since one of the tasks will be to document our work processes. It is especially appropriate for someone interested in cataloging, from the selection of a library system through catalog migration, and also cataloging of local, non-standard materials.

Job Description:
• Learn daily Library operations, provide coverage, and update procedures for the Library Handbook (SOPs).
• Prepare for Library catalog and server migration and support implementation.
• Improve electronic access to internal and external bibliographic information.
• Inventory, catalog and provide user aids and signage for Operations and Maintenance manuals.

Supervision Received:
Works under direction of the Library Supervisor.

Qualifications:
• Enrollment in a Library Science Degree Program
• Attention to detail and good organizational skills.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Cataloging and database experience preferred.

Other Information:
• Work Location: MWRA, Chelsea, MA. 2 Griffin Way.
• Compensation: $11.22 – $15.30 per hour based on education level.
• Work Schedule: Flexible 20-37.5 hours per week, Monday – Friday between 8:00 to 5:00.

Archives Internship, Wildlife Conservation Society (Bronx Zoo), New York NY

Title: Wildlife Conservation Society (Bronx Zoo) Archives Internship

(two openings; nominal stipend available)

The Project: As part of a grant-funded project, the Wildlife Conservation Society Archives is developing a website to display digitized copies of early-twentieth-century scrapbooks. Created by the Bronx Zoo’s first director, William T. Hornaday, these scrapbooks concern early wildlife conservation laws and activities.

The Internship: Reporting directly to the WCS Librarian & Archivist, the Archives Interns will be responsible for creating original descriptive metadata records for the digitized scrapbooks.

Qualifications: Enrollment in (or recent completion of) a Master’s degree program in Library Science, with a focus on Archives, from an ALA-accredited institution. Proven experience with Microsoft Excel. Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently. Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Internships at the WCS Archives are a learning experience, but students who have experience with Dublin Core and with Omeka software are encouraged to apply. An interest in early scrapbooks and/or the history of wildlife conservation is also useful.

Schedule: 12 weeks (scheduled between June 3-August 30, 2013), 10 hours a week, for a total of 120 hours. Work must be scheduled within 9:00-5:00, Monday-Friday.

Graduate Student Intern, Michigan Tech Archives, Houghton MI

The Michigan Technological University Archives and Copper Country Historical Collections seeks a graduate student intern for Summer 2013. As a regional history manuscript collection, the Michigan Tech Archives collects material which documents the history of the Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan’s Western Upper Peninsula, including its historic copper mining industry.

The intern selected will receive substantive experience in both public service and collections handling activities. The intern will assist in day-to-day public service activities, including greeting and assisting researchers, retrieving and shelving historical records, and assisting university and community patrons with use and duplication of materials. Public service will be particularly critical during the FinnFest celebration and the Historical Society of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula History Conference, both scheduled in June 2013.

The intern will also gain experience in organizing, describing, and processing archival collections. S/he will apply theories of appraisal, organization, and description to working manuscript
collections. This includes researching people or events covered by a collection, sorting, cleaning, arranging, boxing, and creating a full finding aid complete with appropriate index terms.

Requirements:

Enrolled in a Master’s Degree program in Library & Information Science specializing in archival studies. Knowledge of contemporary archival practices, policies, and procedures, including arrangement and description, and familiarity with DACS, LCSH, and AAT. Demonstrated analytical and research skills. Ability to work independently and exercise initiative, discretion, and judgment.
Ability to work collegially and effectively with others. Knowledge of basic computing and software in the Microsoft Office Suite.

This is a summer position from June 3 to August 30, 2013, although the start and end dates are flexible. The intern will be expected to work 40 hours per week and will be paid at the rate of $10.00 per hour. There are no benefits included with this position and the successful candidate will be expected to cover his or her own travel expenses to Houghton, Michigan. Although housing is not provided, Archives staff can assist the successful candidate in exploring local housing options. The Managing Librarian I is responsible for managing all operations of the library, assuring effective operation of a full array of services to local and regional customers.

This position includes mornings, afternoons, evenings and weekend hours. Successful candidate may be required to adapt to future schedule and location changes depending on library needs.

- Plan, develop, and direct programs to serve the needs of customers of all ages in the library service area and promote the mission and objectives of the Library District
- Direct the operation and maintenance of the library’s physical facilities and equipment
- Direct the quality of reference work by staff and perform effective reference services
- Provide effective direction to assigned staff to assure the quality of public service; interview, select, and train staff; coach staff and arrange for or facilitate continuing training
- Assure the fiscal soundness of library operations; develop operating and capital budgets; negotiate and obtain budget approvals from local government officials; monitor and report expenditures compared to budget and initiate needed corrective actions to maintain fiscal integrity; direct daily accounting transactions for the library; review and approve purchases
- Perform effective library and reference collection management to provide for a materials collection appropriate for the needs and interests of the library’s customers through research
- Perform effective community relations and promote library programs through presentations and negotiations with local government officials and various organizations
- Act as Sno-Isle’s contact with city staff; liaison to local library board; and staff support for local Friends of the Library.
Requires substantial knowledge of library operation and administration; direction of library staff; advanced reference and bibliographic search methods and systems; collection management; fiscal administration; Library District policies and procedures; and public/community relations policies and methods.

Requires the ability to supervise staff in a manner that enhances performance and assures quality public service; manage physical facilities and library collections; administer budgets and fiscal assets; speak and understand English; make personal presentations to various public groups; work cooperatively and have favorable relations with public and co-workers.

These skills and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of experience and training including a required Master’s degree in Library Information Science from an ALA-accredited college or university, the ability to obtain a Washington State Librarian certificate upon employment, and a minimum of four years of related practice in librarianship with a minimum of one year of supervisory experience.

The Providence Community Library is seeking a full time Library Supervisor to manage the operation of three or more neighborhood libraries. This includes developing and implementing a program of services which includes reference and information services as well as a variety of programs for adults and children. He/she may also review and select library materials for addition to the library collection, and works with librarians and staff at other neighborhood libraries to develop library services. The Library Supervisor also provides direct service to patrons.

The Library Supervisor is the Providence Community Library’s liaison with the local community, and a key player in creating and sustaining positive relationships. He/she is expected to develop collections and services which are responsive to community needs and a staff which is dedicated to outstanding customer service. He or she is expected to establish productive relationships with community groups and agencies, and to develop and implement a range of library services which are tailored to the needs of the neighborhood.

Neighborhood library service provides a librarian with a wonderful opportunity to contribute to the community. Library Supervisors meet and get to know a wide variety of people, and to help them by providing an essential service. The Claire T. Carney Library is seeking a Library Assistant III in Access Services. The employee will have interest and experience in overseeing an off-campus library services program. The Head of OCLS will help improve integration of library services within the courses and programs offered to students who take courses via distance learning modalities and at Centers across Maine. This is a part-time, pre-professional position that will provide incumbents with experience in reference and access services, as well as in supervision of student workers. Candidates must demonstrate significant interest in all aspects of public services work in an academic library.
