The Redwood Library and Athenaeum in Newport, RI, is seeking an outgoing, enthusiastic, and self-directed part-time Children’s/Young Adult Librarian to create a welcoming atmosphere and provide high-quality, consistent programming and services. The Library

Founded in 1747 upon the principle of “having nothing in view but the good of mankind,” the Redwood Library and Athenaeum is the oldest lending library in America, and the oldest library building in continuous use in the country.

Responsibilities

The Children’s/Young Adult Librarian is solely responsible for all library activities, educational programs, and services specific to Children and Young Adults, including collection development, policies, and programming. The Librarian is responsible for developing forward-looking strategies for Children’s and YA services and coordinating those service operations with other library services and functions. Specific duties include:

1. Develops, plans, promotes, and facilitates a consistent schedule of high-quality programs for children and young adults, with primary emphasis on meeting the needs of members.

2. Develops and implements creative approaches to serving children’s and young adult library needs.

3. Oversees budget recommendations, acquisitions, and collection development of children’s and young adult library materials.

4. Supervises children’s and young adult department volunteers and interns.

Qualifications

1. Master’s Degree in library and information science with minimum 2 years professional experience in a children’s/young adult setting.

2. Knowledge of current children’s and teen literature, reference resources, and practices.

3. Fluency in office and library software as well as current recreational technology used by children and teens.

4. Initiative, flexibility, strong interpersonal skills, and good written and verbal communication skills.

Schedule

Part time with some weekday morning and afternoon hours and regular Saturday hours. July and August schedule will be 22 hours/week, with 17 hours/week during the remainder of the year.

Salary: $21/hour

Project Archivist, Redwood Library & Athenaeum, Newport, RI

The Redwood Library invites applications for a full-time 12-month archives processing project to be completed between June 2013 and June2014.

Job Summary: Under the general direction of the Assistant Director, and with guidance from the Special Collections Librarian, the Project Archivist has primary responsibilities for processing selected manuscript collections. The project will focus on the collections that are most significant for documenting Newport history, including colonial-era records such as the Gideon Wanton Papers and the Irish, Bailey, Atwood Papers as well as the early nineteenth-century James DeWolf Papers. Other collections might include the records of the Newport Garden Club and the Newport Horticultural Society, the John E. Rovensky Papers, and the Ralph E. Carpenter, Jr., Papers.

The Project Archivist is expected to adhere to national standards as well as local practice. This is a full-time 12 month position with benefits and a salary of $42,500. This project is funded by the van Beuren Charitable Foundation.

Specific Duties:

1. Arrange the collections, house them in appropriate archival containers, and describe them in finding aids according to current archival standards.

2. Use Archivists Toolkit software to manage collection data and finding aids.

3. Export MARC records from Archivists Toolkit, adjust them for local practice, and work with Technical Services Librarian to import them to OCLC.

4. Convert finding aids to Encoded Archival Description and post them to Rhode Island Archival and Manuscript Collections Online (RIAMCO) with links from the Redwood Library web site.

5. Consult with Special Collections Librarian on context for the collections as well as proper handling of materials.

Outputs/outcomes:

• A DACS-compatible finding aid for each collection that is processed.

• A MARC record for each collection that is processed.

Qualifications:

1. MLS/MLIS with concentration in archival studies from an ALA-accredited program.

2. Experience processing manuscript collections gained through internships or paid employment.

3. Knowledge of DACS and EAD.

4. Keen ability to read and interpret manuscript data.

5. Strong attention to detail.

6. Demonstrated ability to complete projects on time.

7. Knowledge of Rhode Island history, colonial history, and early American history preferred.

8. Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor and other employees.

Work is performed in a library/historic site environment. There is exposure to dust, mold, cleaning solutions, and solvents. The work involves standing, stooping, walking, and some physical effort to lift and move manuscript material.

Overview: Provides leadership and coordination in the library’s digital research and education programs, including creation of digital and new/emerging media resources, services, and facilities.

Essential Duties:
1. Coordinate the physical, and lead the virtual, training/education programs as integral components to the library’s TLR enterprises. Participate in library outreach and digital education programs and the programs’ impact and effectiveness assessment on campus and beyond. Participate in physical and virtual research services, including multimedia, bibliographic research, management, and assistance. Leads outreach training surrounding the library’s growing digital resources, access tools, and other pertinent software. Design, produce just-in-time Web-based, individualized tutorials, as well as present and coordinate live online workshops. Train other library staff in this function. May identify and make recommendations for additional software and services surrounding our digital outreach and education programs.
2. Work collaboratively on library outreach and digital TLR programs with IT, ITDP, AMS, CTE, and OAS, and the College’s shared/integrated services (iHelp). Participate in outreach, training, and production related to the libraries’ MediaHub and work closely with the staff in Digital Publishing Services to create and maintain services. Incorporate library resources into Sakai, Sharepoint, and other CMS and LMS systems. Teach workshops for faculty, staff, and students related to use of Library+Commons and MediaHub technology. Investigate methodologies and best practices for creating, promoting, and disseminating student-authored digital content and products. Pursue professional development activities.
3. Coordinate, participate, and assist in all digital research and education initiatives; including research services, collection (virtual and physical) management, recommending purchase of database, electronic resources, and development of Web based instruction materials. Seek opportunities for outreach to library staff, academic/campus departments, students, the HELIN Library Consortium, and the broader profession.

Education and Experience Required:
MS in Instructional Design or Educational Technology or MLS from an ALA-accredited institution or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience; additional graduate degree/s strongly preferred. Demonstrated expertise in research, instruction and education, online/ synchronous, face to face/synchronous, and hybrid, and assessment of instruction and education programs. Demonstrated expertise integrating traditional and high-tech services, resources and tools for teaching, learning, and research; expertise or high-level proficiency with multiple operating systems and platforms. Demonstrated expertise with and ability to teach pertinent digital media, publishing, and audio and video tools. Technological expertise vis-à-vis the vital relationship between the library’s information technologies and services, instructional technologies and media services, and the technology resources throughout the HELIN consortium. Demonstrated administrative and project management experience and high proficiency. Ability to teach others. Solid interpersonal skills. Excellent communication skills, with collegial and inclusive style. Expertise in database and internet search and peripherals, including bibliographic tools and utilities.

Essential Duties:

    1. Coordinate and manage monograph, standing-order, and similar workflows; automated book/e-book, ordering and MARC, etc., record creation using YBP GOBI Busca WebOffice, etc. Use of SkyRiver, and other bibliographic utilities to import MARC, etc., records, when automation cannot be used. Check new orders against possible duplication in millennium/Sierra as well as e-book portals (such as EBL); monitor book fund allocations; and analyze donated materials. Use ILS system to run reports, ERM and other tools to gather usage statistics; and learn/evaluate new e-resource technology. Perform copy cataloging functions and routine record maintenance for print and electronic standing orders.
    2. Under guidance from Research, Education and Collections Librarian, participate in discussion and action as traditional resources, collections and tools are evaluated and transformed (e.g., print to digital; local to “cloud”). Participate in discussions on e-resource sharing within HELIN consortium, as well as future partnerships. Participate in discussions on new and innovative resources for the community.
    3. Provide general research, education, and information resource sharing support in the Library+Commons; participate in cross-functional Library+Commons initiatives (e.g., create/maintain Research Guides, marketing library resources, ResearcHub, MediaHub, TecHub, access service collaborations); cross-train and collaborate on pertinent Intercollections projects and/or workflows; contribute to quantitative and qualitative assessment of resource sharing services through data-gathering and analysis.
    4. Perform intermediate and advanced computer functions including managing databases; create, analyze, integrate, and import linked spreadsheets; create mail, envelope, and table merges; create and edit captions, add graphics, edit images, footnotes, endnotes, indices, tables of content; and create master documents and reports and multimedia products using information and media content from several sources. Compose and produce correspondence and reports. Compose, design, and produce multimedia reports and research data and information on the internet.

Marginal Duties:

    1. Answer phones, greet and direct visitors to appropriate areas or person. Sort, open, distribute, and route individual or departmental incoming mail and prepare outgoing mail.
    2. May identify and make recommendations for additional or modified departmental systems. With approval, may design and implement new or modified systems. May serve as an internal resource on departmental administrative questions. May, with supervision, organize and coordinate special projects including presentations, education programs, and special events.

The Redwood Library invites applications from experienced manuscript catalogers for the following part-time temporary position. We are willing to make substantial scheduling accommodations for the right candidate.

Job Summary: Under the general direction of the Assistant Director, and with guidance from the Special Collections Librarian and Technical Services Librarian, the Special Collections Cataloger has primary responsibilities for original cataloging of manuscript materials included in the Rhode Island History Project, a partnership with the John Carter Brown Library. The Project will encompass approximately 25 manuscript items, including bound volumes and some single pages. The Cataloger is expected to adhere to national standards as well as local practice. This is a part-time temporary position with a pay rate of $20 to $35 per hour, depending on experience. Work schedule can be very flexible.

Specific Duties:

1. Create original MARC catalog records in OCLC, following current RBMS cataloging standards for manuscripts.

2. Communicate with Technical Services Librarian regarding local cataloging practices.

3. Consult with Special Collections Librarian on context for the documents as well as proper handling of materials.

The Providence Community Library is seeking a full time Library Supervisor to manage the operation of three or more neighborhood libraries. This includes developing and implementing a program of services which includes reference and information services as well as a variety of programs for adults and children. The Library Supervisor also provides direct service to patrons.

Job Description:
The Web and Digital Services Specialist’s primary responsibility is to develop and maintain the Library’s website in collaboration with the Librarians and Marketing & Communications staff. The Specialist will select, implement, and assess library digital applications that are related to the delivery of library services. In addition, the Specialist will oversee and ensure the delivery of student multimedia and course-related resource support in collaboration with the departments of Instructional Design, Information Technology, and Media Services.

Essential functions of the position include but are not limited to:

1. Web Services –

    a. Develop and maintain a dynamic library website
    b. Identify and implement initiatives to maximize effective use of web-based resources
    c. Serve as the key resources agent for the library’s Digital Content Management
    Work Group.

2. Multimedia Services –

    a. Guide the selection, implementation, and assessment of library digital applications
    b. Collaborate with the departments of Instructional Design and Media Services to
    provide faculty, staff, and student multimedia and course-related resources in
    support of the curriculum
    c. Manage the digital asset management system and train faculty and staff on its use.

3. Design and Marketing –

    a. Design and develop web-based materials for marketing library resources, exhibits,
    and special projects
    b. Assist faculty with digital scholarship projects.

In addition, this position will assist with web-related functions of the digital repository, the University Archives, and other library initiatives while keeping current with new and emerging technologies.

Requirements:
A Bachelor’s degree in Web Design/Development, Multi-Media Design, or a related field is required as well as 3-5 years of experience to include the building and/or integration of web applications and content management systems. Candidates must have advanced proficiency with web management software and programming including Drupal, MYSQL, XML, and Javascript. One to three years of supervisory experience is required. A Master’s degree in Web Design, Multi-Media Design, or a related field is preferred. Familiarity with higher education and the academic library environment and associated systems is a plus.
