PRIMARY DUTIES

Reports to the Teen Librarian. Circulates library materials to customers using an automated system. Assists with library services to teens. Plans and executes programs for teens and tweens. Assists with outreach to the community including school orientations, community events and social media initiatives. Creates special displays to promote teen services. Provides assistance to teens using computers in the teen services area. Shelves materials and carries out clerical tasks as needed. Participates in collection development. Works with other staff to ensure that customers have a positive experience while in the library. Must stay abreast of new trends in teen services. Performs other tasks as assigned.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree and some previous paid library experience. Must enjoy working with teens and have an understanding of teen behaviors. A facility with library computer use, including the Internet and Microsoft Office software is required. Must express oneself clearly, concisely and pleasantly in the English language and be comfortable speaking in front of large groups. Must be able to learn new skills quickly, handle situations with tact and courtesy, and possess initiative. The ability to work with a diverse public in a fast-paced environment is a must. Facility with Spanish and teen literature also a plus. Must be able to push or pull carts; moderate amount of bending, squatting, lifting, stretching.

The innovative Darien Library (CT) – one of the busiest and most highly ranked public libraries of its size in the country – seeks a creative, self-motivated library school student to become a member of the Teen Services team for a six-month internship. The start date is flexible.

This Internship is designed to give the library school student experience and exposure to all aspects of teen services including collection development, reader’s advisory, technology, gaming, outreach, programming, and budgeting. While working closely with a mentor in the department, the Intern will learn about the inner workings of our busy and innovative teen department and have the opportunity to develop new projects and programs.

The successful candidate will have a willingness to learn, a strong interest in working with teens, and a passion for public service. The accepted candidate will receive a wealth of experience from working in this dynamic environment.

Qualifications:
• Enrollment in an ALA-accredited library sciences or information sciences graduate program.
• Superior interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate clearly and with sensitivity when responding to patrons’ information needs.
• Proficiency using basic office computer applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel, and working knowledge of information literacy principles.
• Initiative, flexibility, ability to work in a collaborative team-based environment, and the ability to be self-motivated and work independently.

The Internship is for one day a week starting in April and goes until the end of August when the Summer Reading Program concludes. Darien Library will provide meals and Metro-North train passes for the duration of the Internship as well as mentoring with full-time librarians.

Job Description
Part‐time. Previous library experience preferred; previous experience working with teens required. Must be computer literate and possess good public service skills.

Responsibilities include staffing the Teen Lounge and engaging the teens with games, book discussion, etc. Assist patrons with questions on the online catalog, reserving books and other related assistance. Under the supervision of Head of Teen Services, assist in all aspects of the operation of the Teen Department. Assist in planning and running programs, preparing publicity materials, and creating displays. Perform basic reader’s advisory assistance in the recommendation and retrieval of materials. Refer reference and research questions to the reference librarian on duty. Perform other related duties of a similar nature and complexity as requested by the Teen Librarian or the Library Director. Ability to take direction and to work independently a must.

Schedule
20‐24 hours per week including days, evening and some Saturday work required. Flexibility in scheduling required.

Salary
$14.78 per hour to start. OPEIU position. Full benefits.

Qualifications
High School Diploma required; Bachelor’s degree preferred. Computer skills essential. Library experience preferred; experience working with teens required.

PRIMARY DUTIES

This full-time (40 hour) position in a public library will include some evening and weekend hours. The person in this position manages all aspects of the teen department including budgeting, collection development, programming and departmental goals. Supervises the teen department staff, oversees the teen room and develops departmental policies and procedures. Acts as a liaison to the middle and high schools and other civic organizations serving teens to actively promote library services. Coordinates the teen volunteer program. Participates on the reference team providing direct customer service and acts as an instructor in the library’s computer class program. Participates in the library’s online presence including contributing to the blog, social media outlets and other web-based technologies.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

MLS from an ALA accredited school, minimum of 3 years of library experience. Applicant must have excellent communication skills and demonstrated aptitude for serving the public, especially teens. The successful candidate for this position will demonstrate knowledge of teen culture and technologies; judgment when using reference databases and print resources; flexibility in trying new approaches to customer service; and enthusiasm when promoting library programs and initiatives.

This position may include morning, afternoon, evening and weekend hours including Sundays and may be required to adapt to future schedule and location changes depending on library needs.

  • Provide general readers’ advisory and reference services; assist customers with library facilities and services
  • Develop and present programs to teens and adults. This may include promoting library services through presentations at schools and to other community groups.
  • Assist in development of materials collection through assessment and interpretation of customer interests and analysis of review publications; includes maintenance of assigned collections.
  • Maintain and develop reference materials and sources
  • Explain and assist with usage of library facilities, equipment, rules and service which may include written and verbal instruction and/or training of customers and staff
  • May be in charge of the building in the absence of the manager

Requires competent knowledge of library materials; Library District policies and procedures; integrated library computer systems, electronic resources, materials selection process; readers’ advisory; bibliographic search techniques and reference tools.
