Definition
The Weymouth Public Libraries is in need of a proven professional and self-starter ready to take existing young adult services to the next level and who is interested in being a key member of a progressive, dynamic library system. We seek an innovative, collaborative, flexible, and service-oriented librarian to provide professional and technical support to young adults and adult patrons. The ideal candidate has strengths in programs and services for young adults, contemporary and classic young adult literature, and current and emerging technologies.
Supervision
Works under the general supervision of the Head of Reference & Adult Services. Performs library duties at the professional level in assuming immediate responsibility over programs and services for young adults aged 12-18.
Job Environment
Work is performed under typical office and library conditions. The work environment is moderately quiet. Occasionally required to work outside of normal business hours. In addition, may be required to work on weekends and evenings when staffing levels and staffing situations dictate.
Operate computer and other standard office equipment. Experience working with an integrated library system and emerging technology. Familiarity with downloadable media, blogs, social networks, and website maintenance.
Daily contact with library patrons, other town departments, and other library organizations by phone, in person, and in writing. Excellent customer service skills required.
Essential Functions

Provides general reference service using print and electronic resources and reader’s/listener’s/viewer’s advisory service to patrons of all ages in person, by telephone, and via email. Participates in library instruction and reference use program, actively supporting the program and helping to market it to patrons and the community through outreach and publicity.
With the direction from and involvement of the Head of Reference & Adult Services, develops a full range of young adult programming including but not limited to book clubs, special events, music and arts programs. Responsible for programming from stage of conception through planning and publicity, and follow up.
Develops, chairs, and works with members of the Teen Advisory Group as well as other young adult groups such as the Anime Club and book clubs.
Establishes effective working relationships with teachers, school administrators, and school librarians in order to enrich young adult collection and associated programs and services.
Recommends materials for the development of the young adult reference and general collections. Actively participates in collection development and weeding.
Assist patrons with the online public access catalog and public computers.
Updates library website and social networking sites as needed to promote young adult programs and services. Explores new technologies for communicating and engaging teens.
Active participation expected on library network committees and/or statewide committees as needed.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
Master’s degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited school.
Certification by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.
Three years of professional library experience.
Knowledge, Ability, and Skill
Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of library principles, practices, and current trends and resources in reference. Thorough knowledge of young adult literature, young adult reference sources, including print, databases, and online sources. Knowledge of and comfort with emerging library/information technology skills and trends.
Ability and Skill: A strong public service commitment with excellent customer service and communication skills. Ability to provide consistent, high-quality and patron-centered service. Excellent skills in interpersonal relations, and written, oral, and online communication. Excellent organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work creatively, effectively, independently, and cooperatively with colleagues, patrons, and the community at large, especially young adults. Ability to foster open communication and cooperative relationships. Must have superior abilities in the area of reference and reader’s/listener’s/viewer’s advisory. Ability to troubleshoot public computers and printers. Have a broad understanding of archival practice and digital technology-related activities. Should be comfortable with public speaking and have presentation experience.
Physical Requirements
Light physical effort required in carrying and shelving books, and in performing other typical library functions. Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and climbing. Ability to operate a keyboard at an efficient speed. Frequently required to sit and talk or hear, use hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with arms and hands. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move materials weighing up to 10 pounds.

Full time, 35 hours per week; one evening shift each week and every third Saturday shift required.
Salary: $31,214.91 to $51,620.48
