More Professional Organizations

This week’s post highlights some more professional organizations that may be useful for students interested in art and visual resources.  As a reminder, membership in these organizations and attendance at their events may be eligible for partial reimbursement under LISSA’s Professional Development Reimbursement Policy.  Don’t forget to apply for reimbursement for Fall 2010 activities by submitting your Form A by midnight on October 1st!  More information on the process is available on LISSA’s Wiki (http://gslis.simmons.edu/wikis/lissa/Professional_development_reimbursement_policy).

Visual Resources Association (http://www.vraweb.org/).  This organization provides resources for image management professionals, with a particular focus on those working in educational or cultural heritage environments.  Student membership is $35 per year and members are entitled to a number of benefits including a subscription to the organization’s publication and registration discounts on professional development events and the annual conference, which is being held in Minneapolis, Minnesota from March 24th to 28th in 2011.

Major Orchestra Librarians’ Association (http://www.mola-inc.org/).  Founded in 1983, this organization provides professional information, workshops and job postings for librarians who work for major orchestras around the world.  250 professional performance organizations are members.

Theater Library Association (http://www.tla-online.org/).  The Theater Library Association provides support and resources for librarians and archivists who work in library collections related to theater, dance, performance art and studies, motion pictures or broadcasting.  Student membership is $20 per year and members are entitled to discounts at conferences and symposia as well as subscriptions to both print and electronic publications.  This year’s conference is being held November 18th to 21st in Seattle, Washington.

Costume Society of America (http://www.costumesocietyamerica.com/index.html).  This organization is dedicated to education, research and preservation related to costume and dress.  They host symposia and tours of significant sites.  Their website also provides information on grants, scholarships and job openings.  Student membership is $45 per year.

Association of Architecture School Librarians (http://www.architecturelibrarians.org/).  This organization for architecture school librarians has a membership fee of $15 per year.  They also have a blog, Facebook page and listserv that provide information of interest to their membership.  Their 2011 conference will be held in Montreal, Canada, but dates are not yet available.  In the past, travel awards have occasionally been available for those traveling to their conference.
