GSLIS After Dark Recap

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011
GSLIS After Dark Poster

This is the poster that was presented at GSLIS After Dark.

On April 28th, officers of Panopticon attended GSLIS After Dark, the school’s annual alumni event.  At this event, we presented a poster presentation on the creation of Panopticon’s new website and the usability testing that we did to refine the final version currently available.  The poster (seen to the left) highlighted some of the key features of the website and showed our findings from our two-participant usability test.  It also showed the changes we made based on these results.  The poster was well received, with several alumni expressing interest in the usability test and the website.

The rest of GSLIS After Dark was also great.  Before dinner, attendees had an opportunity to speak with alumni and students in attendance and to see the other posters being presented.  Then, after dinner, Maura Marx, the evening’s award recipient, gave a very interesting presentation about her career and answered questions.

Support ArLiSNAP!

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

ArLiSNAP, a group for students and new professionals in art librarianship, has been a Special Interest Group of ARLIS/NA for more than seven years. Now, they are petitioning to become a Section instead, to allow them to better serve their members. And, they need everyone’s support for this effort to be a success! Check out their blog for more details on how you can support this process: http://arlisnap.org/2011/03/07/arlisnap-section-petition/

Interested in Getting Involved with ArLiSNAP?

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

Art Library Students and New ARLIS Professionals (ArLiSNAP) is holding elections for the position of 2011-2013 Coordinator. This position is a great way to get involved with the organization and the profession and candidates do not have to go to the Minneapolis meeting to be eligible to run. More information about the position and the election process is available on the ArLiSNAP blog and announcing your candidacy is as easy as posting to the blog by March 13th. Good luck!

Recap of the Contemporary Art Curator Panel

Monday, February 28th, 2011

Did you miss the Contemporary Art Curator Panel Discussion hosted at Simmons on February 15th? If so, check out this excellent summary by Panopticon member Randolph Pfaff.

You can also check out photos from the event on Panopticon’s Flickr account.

New Art Events and Resources

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011

There are some interesting new events and resources available for students interested in arts and visual resources librarianship.

First, tomorrow (provided it is not postponed due to the weather), Simmons will be screening Exit Through the Gift Shop, the film about the street artist Banksy, and will also be hosting a panel discussion with several local artists and others involved in the arts in and around Boston. More information is available on the Simmons Events website.

Then, on February 15, 2011 at 6:30 Simmons GSLIS will host a panel discussion with Boston area curators of contemporary art. The discussion will focus on the information seeking needs and behaviors specific to contemporary art. How do libraries support the process? What improvements could be made to support contemporary research? How can contemporary curators work with librarians to build excellent collections, particularly in tough economic times? The panel will involve several local curators and should provide an interesting insight into how libraries and librarians can support their work. In addition to GSLIS students interested in art librarianship, the event is also open to New England area art librarians and museum professionals.

In addition to these local events, there are two new noteworthy online resources of interest to those interested in art and visual resource libraries. First, Google has launched the Art Project. This new resource allows users to explore and experience art and museums from around the world including from the Tate Britain and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. Users can zoom in on individual pieces and navigate through whole rooms as well.

Additionally, as highlighted on ArLiSNAP’s blog, the blog Just An Art Librarian provides insight into the day-in-a-life activities of a museum librarian. If that is a field that interests you, its definitely worth checking out!

ARLIS/NA Spring Conference: Volunteer Opportunity, and an Event Worth Attending

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

Interested in attending the ARLIS/NA conference this month, but cannot afford the registration fee? Want a chance to go for free?

The ARLIS/NA listserve passes on these opportunities for a free opportunity to attend the conference.

Volunteer to lead a Sunday dinner group.

Supper Club in the Hub (April 25) is a chance for conference attendees to experience Boston and Cambridge neighborhoods they might not get to see otherwise. Leaders will select a favorite restaurant and shepherd a group of 6-10 conference goers to a Dutch-treat dinner. The type of food is up to you; the only requirements are that it be moderately priced and convenient to the T, so that those staying at the Seaport Hotel can get back fairly easily.

If you were not planning to attend the whole conference, in thanks for volunteering, you can attend a Sunday afternoon session for free. Alternatively, there is also the possibility of your dinner being subsidized by an ARLIS/NE member.

If you’re interested or have questions, please contact Allison Benedetti at benedeta@mit.edu.

Also, available (although not free, unfortunately), should you not be able to attend the entire conference, is Saturday night’s ARLIS (Ar)Tea Party.

Being held in the Harborview Ballroom of the World Trade Center, adjacent to the Seaport Hotel, April 24th, 9-11 pm, this Party will not only a great oppotunity for networking (remember to bring those business cards!), but will also feature video, sound, and performance artists, animation, and installations.

It’s free should you be attending the conference, but those not, tickets are $40 each.
