This course is about the role and place of alternative literature in libraries, focusing on practical methods for better incorporating a full breadth of ideas in collection building and reference service. Specific topics covered will be the nature of the alternative press, challenges to incorporating alternative publications in libraries, strategies for collection development, and strategies for reference and instruction. The course will include readings, quizzes, participation in a discussion forum, and a practical activity in relation to participants' own work settings. Participants are expected to spend 15 hours on the four-week course.
