Instruction Librarian Boot Camp

Please note: This is a five-week workshop.
Whether you’re a new instruction librarian learning the ropes or a seasoned instructor seeking some new skills, this workshop will help you to become a more adept and learner-centered instructor. Learn skills and tools that you can apply to any teaching situation, from one-shot sessions to semester-long courses.
Contents will include an overview of technological and active learning tools that you can use to make your instruction more engaging and memorable, and techniques that will help you to direct, assess, and meaningfully reflect upon your teaching.
Participants will learn how to accomplish the following activities in their library instruction sessions through a combination of reading, discussion, and the construction of individual examples. Participants are welcome to use their own upcoming instruction sessions as the basis for their assignments.
Participants in this course will learn to:
- Create and use learning outcomes
- Select and use engaging technology tools
- Construct active learning classroom activities
- Design and conduct assessments
Jason Puckett: Jason Puckett is Communication Librarian at GSU in Atlanta and a 2010 Library Journal Mover & Shaker. He writes and speaks about open-source software in libraries, digital rights management, and information literacy instruction topics. He podcasts at Adventures in Library Instruction and blogs at Librarian X. Jason is the author of the book Zotero: A Guide for Librarians, Researchers and Educators.

Sarah Steiner: Sarah Steiner is the Social Work and Virtual Services Librarian at Georgia State University in Atlanta. She has eight years of experience teaching one-shot and term-long courses to teens and adults. She writes and speaks on the topics of instructional assessment, technology planning and maintenance, and virtual reference. Sarah was named a LYRASIS NextGen Librarian in 2009 and a Library Journal Mover & Shaker in 2011.
