Frequently Asked Questions:

Who is Catherine Hering Jensen?

Catherine Hering Jensen attended Simmons College from 1943-1945. Cathie was very active in campus life at Simmons, and kept a scrapbook of her time there. For more information on her life, take a look at the Biography & History page.

What is a digital scrapbook?

Cathie kept a detailed scrapbook from her time at Simmons, including news clippings, letters, and souvenirs from her daily life as well as special events. In 2008, this scrapbook was scanned into a computer, then edited and enhanced so that people could view items in the scrapbook over the Internet. This makes her scrapbook available to people throughout the world, instead of just to people who can visit the Simmons College Archives. By digitizing her collection, you can view whole scrapbook pages or an individual item, read a description of each item, and search for materials about a certain topic or person within the scrapbook.

How do I find materials in the scrapbook? What's the difference between "Searching" and "Browsing"?

You can find materials in two ways: by either "Searching" the collection, or "Browsing." Both will help you discover materials in the scrapbook, but work in different ways:

Searching:

Good to use if you are looking for materials on a certain topic (e.g. Parties), a particular type of object (like photographs), or a person whose name you know (such as a Simmons professor). Also, searching can be used if you know the name of someone who created one of the objects in the scrapbook. For example, if you wanted to find materials made by Cathie herself, you would Search using Catherine Hering Jensen in the "Creator" field.

Ways to search:

* Click the "Search" link from any page, at the top of the page in the blue header.

* From the Homepage, click "Search the Scrapbook."

* From any page, enter a keyword term in the Search Box at the top of the page.

Browsing

Good to use if you want to discover items through the scrapbook but don't have any specific questions in mind. You can flip through the scrapbook page by page, or look at all the items that relate to a specific subject (like Mascots), or if you're interested in looking at all items of a certain type (such as Clippings from newspapers or Programs from events Cathie attended).

Ways to Browse:

* Click the "Browse" link from any page, at the top of the page in the blue header.

* From the homepage, click on "Browse the Scrapbook."

In short, "Search" is good if you are looking for something specific. "Browse" is good if you don't quite know what you're looking for!

Can I copy an image from this scrapbook?

Who are the teaching resources for?

Who made this website?

This website was made by Simmons College graduate students in the Graduate School of Library and Information Science in 2008. Catherine Hering Jensen had given this scrapbook from her college days to the Simmons College Archives, and the students digitized it as a part of their coursework for LIS 462, Digital Libraries. To learn more about the creation of this site, see the About the Project page.

Are there other digital libraries like this one from Simmons College?

Yes! Notable Women of Simmons College is a collection of digital libraries created by Candy Schwartz's LIS 462 classes beginning in 2005. Visit the Notable Women of Simmons College page for access to the other collections!
